Too few are left. Another Band of Brothers focusing on the Pacific is coming soon. I don't know how we all bow our heads on the internet. But we should.

The best I can do is a moment of silence

BY ROGER BROWN
BRISTOL HERALD COURIER

“The world depended on them. They depended on each other.”

That was the tagline for “Band of Brothers” – an award-winning 2001 HBO mini-series drama on the World War II experiences of Easy Company, a U.S. Army unit that fought bravely and fiercely across Europe.

But for Bristol’s Margo Johnson – daughter of Darrell “Shifty” Powers, one of the soldiers depicted in “Band of Brothers” – two more lines could be added to describe her heroic father: “The world truly admired Darrell Powers. I absolutely adored him.”

“I loved everything about my daddy,” Johnson said. “He never bragged about what he did in the war. And for a lot of years, he never even talked much about what he did – unless someone asked him about it.

“But he truly was a hero to me,” Johnson said. “Just like he’d been to the people who know him as a soldier in a [mini-series].”

Powers, a Dickenson County native, died earlier this week at age 86 following a battle with cancer. His funeral service will be held today in Clintwood.

“He was a brave man, even to the end of his life,” Johnson said of her father. “He’s helping me be brave now, too.”

Bravery – and dignity – was a constant, running thread in the life of “Shifty” Powers, both during and after his life as an Army sharpshooter in the actual “Band of Brothers.”

During the war, he fought brutal battles against the German army across France and Belgium.

After the war, Powers served as an eloquent representative for the men he fought with: At one point during the “Band of Brothers” mini-series, he appeared on camera to talk in moving, humane fashion about his grim but necessary task during the war – killing the enemy.

And, too, Powers served as a loyal, steadfast representative for the country he fought for: from graciously meeting with a former enemy German soldier to eagerly accepting any chance to speak with modern-day members of the U.S. military.

Ivan Schwarz, a producer on the “Band of Brothers” HBO series, remembers Powers as a “kind, generous soul with a great sense of humor.”

“Shifty was an incredibly humble human being,” said Schwarz, now executive director of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission in Cleveland, Ohio.

“He was like most of the other [Easy Company] soldiers we met for the series. They were good guys who were kind of shocked that, 50 years later, people were making a big deal over them for just doing their duty.

“That’s exactly how [Powers] was, too,” Schwarz said.

Attempts were unsuccessful to reach Peter Youngblood Hills – the English actor who portrayed Powers in the “Band of Brothers” miniseries, through both HBO and his former publicity firm, Hamilton Hodell in London, England.

Very sad,I knew of Shifty very well. For those of you who like military history, and enjoy to read, take time and check out the book version of BOB. I read it before I saw the mini series and it really helped with the characters.
We have the series on DVD,and I take time to watch it each year.

How many of you watched it,and hated the instructor at jump training? David S. from the Friends series.

Not trying to compare,or take away from a true hero, but man did you hate your DI's at boatcamp. After it was over, you respected them for what they made you.

Thanks as always for another great thread.I really thank-you for finding stuff like this for us on your site Todd.

Thanks for your service Ryan, and I'm sure you're proud of Cole getting in.

There are a lot of people like myself who haven't served but try to respect and honor those that did.

I actually read a little story about a guy that recognized Shifty in an airport a few years ago. He thanked him and Shifty got a little teary-eyed, he was on his way home from Normandy and was missing his dead comrades, he was one of the last living guys of his unit.

The guy in the story had a 1st class seat and as they got on the plane he saw Shifty go back to coach. The writer said he couldn't bear to sit there so he got up and went back to Shifty to give him his seat, Shifty wouldn't take it. All he said was "Son, thanks for remembering, that's thanks enough."

It is a great series and I own it on DVD too. It's on the History Channel every few months. Their first commander was a Horses Azz. Dick Winters was a servant leader, great great man.

It's hard to pick a best scene in the series, there are just too many.

To touch on the subject of being a vet, here are a few things I've learned.

The guys that don't say much on what they did while they were in the service are the ones to respect. If you ask, they tell, but keep things simple.

Those guys that brag about being a war hero, etc, they usually were a clerk or cook. Very Happy

So me being a clerk.............

You were a Nuclear Clerk.... Now I know why your glow lures are so bright Razz

And if I understood you correctly, far from a clerk. I say that with respect my friend.

Dale Hansen was my wife's great uncle I believe. Surprisingly their family really never even talks about him, but he was young and gone early. As I understand it, his buddies were killed next to him and he flipped out and wiped out a pile of the enemy, it's an amazing read below.

One of the biggest heroes of WWII, Karl Timmerman, was from West Point. He saved the bridge at Remagen. http://militaryhistory.about.com/od/worldwarii/p/remagen.htm

PRIVATE DALE M. HANSEN
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE

for service as set forth in the following CITATION:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, First Marines, First Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa Shima in the Ryūkyū Chain, 7 May 1945. Cool and courageous in combat, Private Hansen unhesitatingly took the initiative during a critical stage of the action and, armed with a rocket launcher, crawled to an exposed position where he attacked and destroyed a strategically located hostile pillbox. With his weapon subsequently destroyed by enemy fire, he seized a rifle and continued his one-man assault. Reaching the crest of a ridge, he leaped across, opened fire on six Japanese and killed four before his rifle jammed. Attacked by the remaining two Japanese, he beat them off with the butt of his rifle and then climbed back to cover. Promptly returning with another weapon and a supply of grenades, he fearlessly advanced, destroyed a strong mortar position and annihilated eight more of the enemy. In the forefront of battle throughout this bitterly waged engagement, Private Hansen, by his indomitable determination, bold tactics and complete disregard of all personal danger, contributed essentially to the success of his company's mission and to the ultimate capture of this fiercely defended outpost of the Japanese Empire. His great personal valor in the face of extreme peril reflects the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
/S/ HARRY S. TRUMAN

Posthumous honors
Camp Hansen, one of the ten Marine Corps camps on Okinawa comprising Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler, is named in honor of Pvt. Hansen.

And help me out here,I'm drawing a blank. The kid that left the NFL to join the ARMY Rangers, and was killed in action. That is a hero.

The Rangers have some of the hardest training a guy can encounter.Hard to get into, let alone make it through it.

To give you a idea on a Ranger.

100+ pushups in two minutes
100+ situps in two minutes
12 minute two mile run.

Shifty,your a hero,reast in piece.
